Forest Management in the Castle Region
Recently, there has been a considerable amount of discussion concerning forest management in the Castle Region of southwestern Alberta. Our Association shares the passion of Albertans for our environment. We also appreciate the concerns that some residents and user groups have.
At the same time, we believe that forests can be managed in a way that is responsible, will protect the integrity of our eco-system, and will create jobs and economic opportunities for Albertans.
Our member companies are committed to good forest stewardship. This means that:
- Companies follow all pertinent legislation, regulations, and government directives;
- Local communities are consulted before operations proceed;
- Forests that have been harvested are replanted with an appropriate mix of tree types. Every year, the forest products industry in Alberta plants more trees than it harvests;
- Effects on animal habitat and watersheds are mitigated.
We know that these techniques work. Many areas of the province (including portions of the Castle Region) have been harvested, replanted, and restored to prime territory for recreation and animal habitat. We also know that without proactive forest management techniques, Alberta’s forests will age and become more susceptible to fire and pests like the mountain pine beetle.
We want to prevent these types of scenarios and enhance the value of the resource for Albertans. Our industry has a proud past in this province, stretching back several generations. We are confident that by working together, we can preserve our forests for future generations to enjoy.
